What it is

ChipLoad is a machinist calculator made by a working machinist and welder/fabricator in Oklahoma who got tired of bouncing between a handbook, a phone calculator and three websites to answer one question: what RPM and feed do I run here? Pick your material, cutter and operation — ChipLoad returns spindle speed, feed rate, chip load, metal removal rate, horsepower and torque, with the formula shown under every result so you can sanity-check it the way you would at the control.

RPM = SFM × 3.8197 ÷ D · FEED = CHIP × FLUTES × RPM · MRR = FEED × WOC × DOC
Inside the App

All 17 tools

Every tool works offline and remembers your last inputs. The Calculator tab runs free in your browser — all 17 tools, including the full Mill and Lathe wizards, are in the app. Or read the speeds and feeds calculator guide for the formulas and tables behind the wizards.

Mill Speeds & Feeds

End mill and face mill wizard — SFM, RPM, feed, chip thinning, HP and torque.

Lathe Speeds & Feeds

Turning wizard by insert shape and operation, with facing SFM checks.

IN APP

Drill & Tap

Drilling speeds and feeds plus rigid-tap RPM and feed that matches the thread.

IN APP

Drill Point & Csk

Drill point length and countersink depth/diameter geometry.

IN APP

Ball Nose

Effective diameter, adjusted RPM and stepover for ball-nose finishing.

Why ChipLoad

Why machinists keep it on the home screen

  • Built by a working machinist — designed at a machine, not in a marketing department.
  • Handbook numbers, formulas shown — thread math per ASME B1.1 / B1.13M; every result shows how it was got.
  • My Machine profiles — save each machine's max RPM and horsepower; the wizards cap speed and warn before a cut asks for more power than the spindle has.
  • Cut-intensity slider — back a cut off for a light machine or a long stickout, or push it when the setup is rigid.
  • Fully offline — works in a steel building with one bar of signal, or none.
  • No subscription, ever — Pro is one payment and done. No ads, no account, no data collection.
  • Inputs persist — close it mid-job, come back tomorrow, your setup is still there. Saved presets remember their own intensity.
  • Big buttons, glove-friendly — laid out for thumbs and shop hands, not a desktop spreadsheet squeezed onto a phone.

FAQ

Questions

Is ChipLoad free?

Yes. ChipLoad is a free download, and new installs get the full app for a 5-minute trial. After that the free tier keeps the Calculator in full plus the Mill and Lathe wizards in a starter form. A one-time Pro unlock ($10.99) opens all 17 tools in full, forever — no subscription.

Does ChipLoad work offline?

Yes, completely. Every tool, table and saved setup lives on your device. No account, no sign-in, no ads, and nothing about your work leaves your phone — it works in a dead-zone shop or with the phone in airplane mode.

Does it cover both mill and lathe work?

Yes. ChipLoad has separate speeds & feeds wizards for milling and turning, each with its own material table, tooling choices and cut controls, plus drilling and tapping, drill point and countersink geometry, and ball-nose effective diameter.

What do I get with Pro?

Pro unlocks all 17 tools in full: the complete Mill and Lathe wizards (every material, cutter and operation), Drill & Tap, Drill & Tap Charts, Thread Lookup, 3-Wire Measure, Fasteners with torque, Bolt Circle, True Position, Sine Bar, Trig, Ball Nose, Drill Point & Countersink, Material Weight, Job Cost, Conversions and saved machine profiles. It is a single one-time purchase — pay once, own it forever.

Is ChipLoad on Android?

An Android version is in the works. In the meantime, the Calculator tab runs free in any phone or desktop browser, right from this site, and the full app — all 17 tools — is available now for iPhone on the App Store.

Where do the numbers come from?

The speeds, feeds and tables are standard published shop values, and the thread math follows ASME B1.1 / B1.13M formulas. Every result shows the formula behind it. Like any calculator, the numbers are starting points — prove them out on a first pass before you commit to the cut.

Put the calculator in your pocket
